Glossary of Terms

Plain-English definitions of the terms you'll see in Zeal, from workflow steps and AI detections to scores and IP terms.

In short: A quick reference for the terms used across Zeal and this Help Centre, grouped by topic so you can find what you need fast.

Understanding the glossary

Zeal uses a few terms of its own, alongside standard IP and internet terms. Each term below has a short, plain-English definition, with a link to its own article where there is one.

1. Workflow

  • Detection: the automated collection of posts, images, accounts and websites into Zeal. Every other step starts here.

  • Moderation: the first step after Detection. Each item is labelled as Legitimate or Potential Infringement, either automatically or by a moderator.

  • Auto-Moderation: rules that label incoming items automatically, based on conditions such as keywords, price, image features and logo detection.

  • Labels: the classifications applied during moderation, such as Counterfeit or Legitimate. You can create and customise labels for posts, images, accounts and websites.

  • Review (Quality Check): a check by Quality Analysts that moderation labels, whether applied manually or automatically, are accurate and consistent. Incorrect labels are corrected.

  • Validation: an optional step where clients or external reviewers confirm which items should go forward to enforcement. If it isn’t needed, items go straight from Review to Enforcement.

  • Enforcement: sending takedown notices to remove infringing content, then tracking the result.

  • Auto-Enforcement: rules that send takedown notices automatically for items that match set criteria, without manual review.

  • Actionable: an item (post, account or website) that qualifies for enforcement.

  • Tasks: targeted pieces of work set up for Moderation, Review or Validation, so teams can work through items in a structured way. Currently in Beta.

2. Data in Zeal

  • Program: a group of Organisations, so you can switch, search and work across several brands more easily.

  • Organisation: a brand set up in Zeal. Programs group several Organisations together.

  • Post: an item found online, including marketplace listings, social media posts, paid ads and webpages (URLs).

  • Account: a seller or user profile on a platform.

  • Image: a picture retrieved from a post, grouped with its identical and near-identical copies.

  • Website: a standalone website or domain, tracked in Webpages & Domains.

  • Seller Network: groups connected accounts, sellers and websites into clusters, so you can investigate a whole network rather than one account at a time.

3. Detection and AI features

  • AI Smart Filtering: a two-step filter (pre-filtering, then filtering) that checks search results for relevance, so only content about your brand becomes posts.

  • Keyword Intelligence: generates and updates search term variations automatically, catching the misspellings and workarounds bad actors use to avoid detection.

  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR): reads the text inside post images, such as brand names, slogans, prices and serial numbers. Standard OCR is included; Advanced OCR is an add-on.

  • Logo Detection: identifies brand logos in post images, even when the brand name isn’t in the text.

  • AI Category Detection: sorts each post into a product category (for example, Bags) by reading its image and text together.

  • AI Product Detection: recognises your specific products by their shape, colour, structure and packaging, so unbranded replicas are caught.

  • AI Image Feature Detection: spots fine product details, such as packaging, logos and stitching, that separate your genuine products from lookalikes and counterfeits.

  • Image Match: groups identical and near-identical images, so moderating one image applies the decision to every copy.

  • Reverse Image Search Engine (RISE): extends image matching to external search engines, uncovering infringements across the web even when no brand keywords are used.

  • Video Detection: detects posts that contain infringing videos.

  • Corsearch Visual Authentication Network (CVAN): an AI-powered solution that blocks counterfeit posts before they go live.

  • Ask Cortex: an AI assistant in Zeal that answers questions about your moderation and enforcement data in plain English. Currently in Beta.

4. Scores

  • Risk Score: how confident Zeal is that a post is infringing, shown as high, medium or low. It looks at the post’s text, detected logos, keywords, image category, product category and pricing.

  • Duplicated Group Score: how many times the same image appears across live posts, showing how widely an infringement has spread.

  • Impact Score: combines the Risk Score and the Duplicated Group Score into one priority ranking, so you act first where a single action clears the most posts.

  • Cleanliness Score™: the percentage of search results for your priority keywords that are clean, shown in the Visibility section of the Platforms Dashboard.

5. Intellectual property (IP)

  • Intellectual property enforcement: action taken when IP rights (trademarks, copyrights, designs and patents) are infringed.

  • Trademark infringement: unauthorised use of a mark identical or similar to a registered mark, for related goods or services, in a way likely to confuse consumers about their origin.

  • Counterfeit: a type of trademark infringement where an identical or near-identical mark is used on identical goods or services.

  • Copyright infringement: reproducing, distributing, adapting, performing or displaying a copyrighted work without the rights holder’s permission.

  • Patent infringement: making, using, selling, offering for sale or importing a patented product without permission.

6. Channels (platforms and domains)

  • eCommerce: branded or independent websites selling or advertising directly to consumers, usually without seller information. These are tracked in Webpages & Domains.

  • Marketplaces: multi-seller platforms where many businesses or independent vendors list products, with discovery, payments and shipping handled by the platform.

  • Social Media: platforms where users create accounts, share content and interact, often used to promote, advertise or sell products through posts.

  • Apps: mobile or desktop software used to browse, promote or sell products and services, often working as a marketplace or social-commerce environment.

  • News & Blogs: informational websites that publish articles, reviews, announcements, tutorials or commentary rather than selling products directly.

  • Company Website: an official domain owned by a specific company, brand or service.

  • Ads: paid promotional content shown across platforms and websites, directing users to product listings, external storefronts or seller pages.

7. Technical terms

  • Scraper/Crawler: a tool that extracts data from webpages. In Zeal, scrapers collect posts, including ads, from marketplaces, social media, apps and websites.

  • DNS (Domain Name System): the internet’s directory. It translates readable domain names (such as example.com) into the numerical IP addresses that devices use to find each other.

  • A record (address record): points a domain or subdomain to the IPv4 address of the server hosting the website.

  • AAAA record (quad-A record): works like an A record, but points to an IPv6 address, the internet’s newer, longer address format.

  • MX record (mail exchange record): tells other mail servers which server receives email for a domain.

  • WHOIS database: a public directory of registration details for domain names and IP addresses, showing who registered a domain, when, and how to contact them (where the details aren’t privacy-protected).
